Literary Week and Literary Festival Turn Campus into a Celebration of Reading and Writing
  • Pan American School

From April 6 to 10, Pan American - The International School of Porto Alegre dedicated an entire week to the power of storytelling, reading, and creative expression. The Literary Week brought together students from all divisions in activities that connected literature to different areas of knowledge, with students taking center stage as authors, curators, and discussion leaders.

The Literary Festival on Saturday, April 11, brought the week to a close with a morning open to the entire school community. Families gathered in the Gym for the opening ceremony before exploring exhibitions, performances, and interactive projects. A book fair with multiple stalls and a used books stand organized by the PAC offered opportunities for students and families to discover new titles, while a cozy Reading Territory invited visitors to slow down and enjoy a book.

The Gym showcased works from the youngest learners, including K5's retelling of "Jack and the Beanstalk," P4's volcano experiment inspired by "From My Window," and G1's comic book signing session. Elementary hallways featured G2 poems dedicated to the planet, G3 mystery narratives, and G5 posters imagining alternative Brazils. In Secondary, G6 screened trailers from their Short Film Project, G7 performed Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," G8 explored Machado de Assis alongside their Genius Hour Fair, and G9-G10 presented Holocaust research, science fiction at an Open Mic, and a bilingual BookTalks session where students shared readings that marked their lives.

Students showcased work spanning genres and formats. Preschoolers presented handmade books and interactive experiments, Elementary students shared poems, mystery narratives, and novel studies, while Secondary students led short film screenings, theatrical performances, research exhibitions, and a bilingual BookTalks session where they discussed readings that marked their lives.

"Literature opens space for different ways of learning and teaching. The Festival allows students to share knowledge with each other and with their families, turning the school into a space where everyone learns together," shares Ms. Barbara Ribeiro, Director of the Brazilian Program.
