Alumni Spotlight: The Dennison Family - From International Day to Culinary Legacy
  • Pan American School

"If it weren't for PAS, we would not have come to Porto Alegre; if it weren't for PAS, we would not have stayed here." These words from Ms. Jilu Dennison, mother of alumni Irene (Class of 2015) and Martin (Class of 2022), capture the profound impact Pan American School can have on entire families. Her journey from PAS parent to founder of Jil Jil's and The Samosa Bar is a story of belonging, cultural exchange, and community support.

The story began on International Day. As the only Indian family at the school at the time, Ms. Jilu felt a strong desire to share authentic cuisine from her culture with the community. The welcome was immediate, and connections grew stronger over the years. Right after the event, people began requesting recipes and placing orders.

In 2013, supported by Pan American School teachers and families, Jilu began delivering her food throughout Porto Alegre. Over time, Jilu realized she wanted to offer more than cuisine; she wanted to share the complete cultural experience of India. This vision led to the creation of Jil Jil's, an intimate space where she also displays her own paintings inspired by different Indian states. The success of Jil Jil's opened doors for The Samosa Bar, extending her culinary and cultural journey even further.

Throughout this entrepreneurial path, the support and empathy of the Pan American School community remained essential. The relationships formed when Irene and Martin were students became the foundation of both a professional network and a circle of friends who believed in her vision.

The Dennison family's story exemplifies Pan American School's mission in action. The school's commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and building genuine community created an environment where Jilu felt empowered to share her heritage authentically. Today, when PAS families and alumni gather at Jil Jil's or The Samosa Bar, they experience the fruits of the school's inclusive culture.

As Ms. Jilu reflects, "If it weren't for PAS, we would not have come to Porto Alegre; if it weren't for PAS, we would not have stayed here." Her words remind us that Pan American School's impact extends beyond education it enables families to thrive, pursue dreams, and contribute uniquely to their adopted home.
