When children come to school they bring with them their talents, their learning preferences, their learning differences, and perhaps most importantly, their ability to learn languages and to use these languages in learning.  As we continue to study theories of learning we know children learn in different ways.  Some need to see what they are learning, some need to hear it, and some need to feel it.  Yet a common trait of all these modalities is how children use language in learning.

The annual MS/HS Open House Event was held on Saturday, August 20, where PAS hosted almost 40% of our MS/HS parents. Open House is the chance to meet teachers and learn all about the classroom expectations and grade level programs that your child will participate in.  These Open Houses are very important as they are a vital step in establishing strong working relationships between home and school, and also the perfect opportunity for you to meet our new teaching staff. For those parents who were unable to attend, please take a look at the presentations and, should you have any questions, please contact the teacher of that class for more information.

Moving through the Pan American School is a very big step for all of our students, and in preparation for this big move, we held a parent meeting on Tuesday, June 7th to discuss the changes in the roles, responsibilities and expectations of our students, parents and staff.

By being informed, working together as a team, and supporting our kids, parents and school staff can help students have a happy, successful and valuable MS/HS experience here at PAS.

Advanced Placement Presentation for Parents of Students in Grades 10-12 for School Year 2011-12

On Friday, April 15, 2011 a presentation was held for parents regarding the unique opportunity for PAS students to participate in Advanced Placement classes when they are in grades 10, 11 & 12. Advanced Placement is the most widely used and respected academic program in the world and students can earn university credit, advanced placement in undergraduate degree programs and/or stand out in the admissions process for university by completing courses and exams at a university level. Thank you to all the parents who attended the Everyday Mathematics Coffee Morning last Thursday, October 21st. We had a positive turnout, with forty-five parents from the ECE through grade 6 levels participating in this event. Topics addressed at the meeting included the Everyday Mathematics program philosophy, components of a typical math lesson, and the process followed for adopting the program at PAS. We will be hosting more math workshops regarding Everyday Mathematics throughout this school year.

On Saturday, August 21, 2010 the entire community of the Pan American School of Porto Alegre was invited to attend our annual MS/HS Open House. This was an event where families could meet the staff of the school, learn about the courses that are being offered this school year and take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas about the Middle and High School and it’s programs.

The presentation given is now available online for any parents who wanted more information or to review the information given, as well as those parents who were unable to attend this event. I would like to encourage all families who were not able to attend to contact their child’s teachers to arrange a meeting to discuss the programs for the coming year.

Finally, I would like to extend a warm and heartfelt thanks to all of the families who attended. It was a pleasure meeting you all, and I look forward to working with you this year to provide the greatest education possible for your child.

Last Saturday April 10th, we held our first Open Doors Event, targeted at parents who have shown interest in enrolling their children at PAS. We had the opportunity of sharing what makes PAS a unique school, one that prepares students for an ever changing world, and one that values the family as a key partner in the educational process.

We were pleased with the participation of over 40 parents, most of whom were referred to us by our families. To these families who helped us, we would like to thank you for your continued support.
